For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the University’s ‘Bringing Research to Life’ Roadshow was successfully back on the road at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show, from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 July.
Across three days, more than 850 attendees visited the UoS Roadshow marquee to experience science and learn something new, from biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine to transport engineering and environmental sciences, thanks to a team of 25 research staff, PhD and undergraduate students.
The UoS Roadshow included live quizzes and team challenges on nature and biodiversity, with the Nature and Biodiversity Community Hub, and a marble run (title picture) to experience the struggles that fish encounter along our rivers, from the International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research, ICER.
The New Forest and Hampshire County Show was a brilliant, enjoyable experience in which we exhibited our marble run. The marble run demonstrates the obstacles that fish face as they traverse through our rivers. We had a lot of interest from both young and old(er!) visitors. It was especially nice to see our younger visitors surprised when they learned some cool fish facts and how humans have affected the environment

The New Forest and Hampshire County Show represents for us a prime example of successful collaboration with local charities that support the early career progression of young scientists at our University.
Seeing the reactions from visitors at our marquee and the success of the activities that the teams created, confirms once again that the UoS Roadshow is a great platform for bringing the voice of our researchers and students to new audiences across the region, but it is also a great place to inspire ideas, further develop communication skills and make new mutually beneficial connections inside and outside of our University.
